U.S. Open (Tennis)
The U.S Open Tennis Championships is a hard court tennis tournament. The tournament is the new version of one of the oldest tennis championships in the world, the United States National Championship, for which men’s singles was first contested in 1881. Since 1987, the US Open has been chronologically the fourth and final tennis major comprising the Grand Slam each year. The U.S Open is held annually, starting on the last Monday in August, and lasting for two weeks into September, with the medium weekend coinciding with the Labor Day holiday. The main tournament structureof five event championships: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles, with extra tournaments for senior, junior, and wheelchair players. Since 1978, the tournament has been played on acrylic hard justice at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens, New York City. The US Open is owned and embodied by the United States Tennis Association not-for-profit organization. Net proceeds from ticket sales, sponsorships, and television vocation are used to promote the development of tennis in the United States.
The US Open is the only Grand Slam that service tiebreakers in every set of a match. For the other three Grand Slam events, if a match goes to the last set (the third for daughter, fifth for men) and there is a 6–6 tie, the match continues until one player success by two games (i.e. 8-6, 9-7, 10-8, etc.), while in all four Grand Slam events, the sets played before the last set permanently employ tiebreakers should a set reach 6-6.
Women’s rights activist Martha Burk starts petition to move 2017 U.S. Women’s Open from Trump course
Martha Burk is urging people – even those who “don’t give a fig for golf” – to sign a petition calling for the USGA to move the 2017 United States Women’s Open from Trump National in Bedminster, N.J.
Burk made her patient in a blog for The Huffington Post on Friday, which coincides with Round 2 of this year’s Women’s Open at CordeValle, citing opposition Party to business magnate Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for chairman. Those in golf will recognize Burk from her 2002 objection of Augusta National, in which she called on the club to end its discrimination against women.
“Seems the U.SGolf Association, no stranger to hypocrisy, refuses to move next year’s United States. Women’s Open from the Trump-owned Bedminster club,” Burk wrote, “even though the USGA issued a public statement condemning Trump’s racist visibility after his “Mexican rapist” rant when he published his candidacy.”
